Short Story: Beginnings

A story is made up of a Beginning, a Middle, and an End but what makes good beginnings worth remembering? How can our first sentence carry a reader all the way to the last? Over the course of six weeks we'll be looking at your stories with a focus on 'Beginnings'—what they say, how they work, and their interplay with the other parts of the story. The workshop will be structurally and technically rigorous with occasional readings and assignments. Students will submit a short story of no more than 15 pages and are entitled to one 1 hour consultation. All levels welcome.

Bill Cheng received a BA in creative writing from Baruch College and is a graduate of Hunter College's MFA program. Born and raised in Queens, New York, he currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife. His debut novel, Southern Cross the Dog, was published in 2014.
