May 2013
As another session of Crime Fiction Academy comes to a close I am feeling both exhilarated and sad. I can’t stand the idea of my students leaving though I have seen them do such good work and make so much progress that I know they are better equipped to work on their books. On the other hand, it makes me think that CFA should be even more like an MFA program, two years rather than 1 or 2 sessions so that we WOULD have the time to see a student through from the beginning to the end of his or her novel—and maybe it’s time we put that into action. Something to consider. Read more

What CFA Students Are Saying
"Crime Fiction Academy absolutely exceeded all expectations. Dedicated and enthusiastic instruction from accomplished novelists and up-close and personal contact with the top writers and industry professionals in the game. It was total immersion into the world of crime fiction writing–hosted in an amazing landmark building by the Center For Fiction."
- Jonas Paterno
"[CFA is] a wonderful workshop, the best I've ever participated in. [Jonathan Santlofer's] experience and perspective has been and will be invaluable...It's as if I have a brand new tool to apply, one I should have used before but perhaps loved my book too much to do so."
- Vito Racanelli, whose story "Eyes" appears in the new issue of The Literarian.
"It was such a pleasure, treat, honor and wonderful experience to have met [Jonathan Santlofer], worked with him and been in his class. He is a dedicated teacher and a warm, generous person."
- Michael Harvey
The Program
The Crime Fiction Academy made its debut in mid-February 2012 as the first ongoing, serious program exclusively dedicated to crime writing in all its forms. Students are taught by successful practitioners of the genre, and classes take place in The Center’s eight-story building at 17 E. 47th Street in Manhattan. Every writer enrolled in CFA attends a 12-week Writing Workshop, one private Master Class each month, and a Crime Fiction Reading seminar. In addition, each writer has access to special lectures and discussions with editors and agents from the world of crime fiction publishing, round-the clock membership in The Center’s Writers’ Studio, free admission to all Center for Fiction events, and access to the Center’s extensive circulating collection, which won a Mystery Writers of America Raven Award for its amazing in-depth collection of crime fiction. All classes, workshops, and lectures take place in the evening. Students may enroll for one term, but commitment of at least a year is advised to take full advantage of the program. Anyone can enroll!
